Who is teaching you

I'm Sandra Lawton

Head & Founder, The National Dog Training Academy

A multi award winning trainer in the New Forest, and the creator of the Harmony Training™ method. Over 15 years my team and I have trained more than 10,000 dogs and their owners, and taught students who now run their own award winning schools across the UK, Ireland and Malta. But my whole approach started with one dog of my own.

First, the bit no one tells you

It is almost never a stubborn dog. And it is almost never you.

If you own a spaniel, a cocker, a lab or any gundog breed as a pet, you know the feeling. You call, you wave, you plead, and your dog carries on as if you are not there. Nose down, ears off, gone.

I learned how that feels the hard way. My own journey started with a Flatcoated Retriever called Rolo. I didn't really understand what I'd taken on. He was bright, busy, full of instinct, and completely out of control. Walks were a battle. Recall was a joke. I felt like I was failing him.

Then I found pet gundog training, and it changed both of our lives. Rolo became the most incredible companion, and I became so taken with how it worked that I went on to train thousands of dogs and build an academy around it.

Why your dog "goes deaf"

Your gundog isn't ignoring you. It's gone self employed.

A gundog is bred to work at a distance, on its nose and its drive. When we don't give that brain a job, the dog finds one. A scent, a rabbit, the far side of the field. A self employed gundog stops checking in with you.

That's what recall failure really is. Not defiance. A dog doing the only job it can find.

The fix isn't shouting louder. It's giving your dog one clear signal that always means something worth coming back for. Nothing does that job like a whistle. It never changes tone, it never sounds cross, and your dog can hear it from a field away.

Picture your next walk

Imagine unclipping the lead without the knot in your stomach

Imagine your dog ranging out across the field, having the time of its life, and the second you lift the whistle to your lips it spins and comes flying back, past the other dogs, past the rabbits, every single time. Imagine the busy beach on a Saturday, the woods full of deer, the footpath by the road, and your dog off lead and reliable in all of them. That isn't luck, and it isn't a special dog. It's a trained habit, and it starts with one whistle.

The Whistle Recall Starter

Value£47 FREEToday only

The exact first steps I give every pet gundog owner who comes to me:

  • Why your dog tunes you out, and the one shift that flips it
  • How to choose and charge a recall whistle so it instantly means something
  • The first simple exercise that gets your dog turning back on a single peep, at home or on a walk
Why free? Honestly, because the fastest way to show you I can help your dog is to help you first, before you pay me a penny. Once you watch your dog turn back on the whistle, the doubt about whether my training works tends to answer itself. That is worth far more to me than £47.

Questions owners ask me

Before you grab it

Is it really free? What is the catch?
No catch. It is a genuine piece of my training, given free. I would rather show you I can help your dog before you ever spend a penny with me. That is the whole point.
Will this work for my breed, or for an older dog?
Yes. The whistle method works for any gundog breed, spaniels, cockers, labs, retrievers, and it works at any age. Recall is a habit, and a habit can be built whether your dog is twelve weeks or twelve years old.
I have tried everything and nothing sticks. Why would this be different?
Because most recall advice skips the one step that makes it stick: charging the whistle so it always, without fail, means something brilliant is coming. Miss that and nothing holds. That is exactly where the starter begins.
Do I need a special whistle or expensive kit?
No. A standard dog whistle and a handful of tasty treats is all you need. Inside I show you how to pick the right whistle so you get it right first time.
How soon will I see a difference?
Most owners see their dog respond to the whistle in the very first session. Truly reliable recall, the kind you can trust off lead, builds over a few weeks of short, daily practice.
Who are you, and can I trust your training?
I'm Sandra Lawton, founder of The National Dog Training Academy, a multi award winning school rated 4.9 on Google. My team and I have trained more than 10,000 dogs over 15 years. This starter is the same approach my own clients begin with.
